When I read Amrita Pritam Ji’s biography a few years ago, I immediately fell in love with her beautiful work. During the same time a dear friend, Paramjeet Singh Ji who is an ardent fan of hers asked me if I would be willing to compose and musically present some of her poems. They say when you wish to do something the entire universe conspires to make it happen. The situation here was somewhat similar.
We set forth on the journey and I found myself immersed in poems of Amrita Ji for the next few months. For me, composing has never been a deliberate effort. I think it is a blessing from up there and tunes are born in my mind at any moment of the day. Sometimes while I am just about to sleep and sometimes while I am sitting in the car waiting to reach a destination. It is a part of me.
25th February 2015 was the day we unveiled the first ever concert Main Tainu Phir Milangi a musical tribute to Amrita Pritam ji. We joined hands with Dharma Bharti Mission which works towards creating a hunger free India and decided to pass on all funds collected at the concert to the cause. Interspersed with narration by Lubna Salim and Salim Arif, the evening was truly beautiful.
Working with something new and presenting that to an audience is always characterized by a certain level of anxiety. This is how I somewhat felt, but the excitement of presenting beautiful compositions overpowered everything. Ik Supne Warga Rang, Aj akhan waris shah nu, Wah Sajan, Main Tainu Phir Milangi were some of the jewels I along with my exceptional musicians performed.
Standing ovation by the audience was the perfect end and beginning to my efforts in taking Amrita Ji’s work to the world over.
